Introduction to the Special Issue on Human Cooperative Wearable Robotic Systems

Abstract

Wearable robots aim to understand and capitalize on the increasingly coupled relationships between human and robots. To this end, the field of wearable robotics considers robotic systems that work either for rehabilitation purpose to provide therapy for persons seeking to recover their physical, social, communication, or cognitive function, or for prosthetic and assistive purpose to support people in accomplishing activities of daily living (ADL) or skilled tasks. Although significant progress has been made in recent years, there are still open issues due to limitations of technology and insufficient knowledge about the human. This Special Issue discusses these two mainstream applications and associated technologies, provides descriptions of some important achievements of the field, and looks into the coming challenges. Cooperative wearable robotics is a broad topic and an ongoing expanding field. This Special Issue collects 9 papers that address some of the important challenges and opportunities in the broad and expanding field of cooperative wearable robotics. The special issue papers are briefly summarized here.
